S-CST for Intimacy After Medical Events

A car accident, a cancer diagnosis, a chronic illness diagnosed after many years of confusing symptoms—many couples will face a medical event during the course of their relationship. When the focus turns to the medical and emotional needs of one partner and the other partner takes on the responsibilities of life while caring for their beloved, the established rhythm of life and relationship roles are upended.

While a medical event can be an extraordinarily difficult experience—one that requires an immense amount of energy and focus—it can also be an opportunity to change ineffective and unsatisfying relationship patterns while deepening the couple’s emotional bond and physical intimacy.

Somatic-Concentric Sex Therapy incorporates a Dance/Movement Therapy approach to working directly with the body-to-body relationship to support the partner who’s body is doing the hard work of healing as well as the support partner who still has their own needs and desires that they often put on the back burner.

When you can’t rely on the familiar relationship pattern to get by and couple’s find themselves in survival mode, S-CST provides a framework to guide them through this healing journey with embodied intimacy skills and resilience practices.

This training offers a somatic framework of working with couples who are navigating a medical event. Participants will learn how to frame a difficult experience as an opportunity to heal more than the injury or medical condition while deepening relationship connection. They will learn embodied intimacy practices that are trauma-informed and inclusive of different body abilities to restore and enhance connection and pleasure for both individuals and couples. Participants will also learn a somatic exploration of personal bias and support for the clinician in session as they support their clients through what may be one of the most challenging experience they will face.

A car accident, a cancer diagnosis, a chronic illness diagnosed after many years of confusing symptoms. Many couples face a medical event during the course of their relationship. When one partner focuses on medical and emotional needs and the other takes on life's responsibilities while caring for their beloved, the established rhythm of life and relationship roles is upended.

While a medical event can be an extraordinarily difficult experience that requires immense energy and focus, it can also be an opportunity to change ineffective and unsatisfying relationship patterns while deepening the couple's emotional bond and physical intimacy.

Somatic-Concentric Sex Therapy incorporates a Dance/Movement Therapy approach to working directly with the body-to-body relationship to support the partner whose body is doing the hard work of healing, as well as the support partner who still has their own needs and desires that they often put on the back burner. Both partners also get to explore the meaningfulness of the journey for themselves and develop shared values to give themselves a sense of purpose and guidance when challenge arises. Both partners will experience personal growth and greater emotional depth and capacity.

When you can't rely on the familiar relationship pattern to get by, couples often find that they feel disconnected and overwhelmed emotionally. Beneath the managing of logistics and conveyer belt of treatment appointments, both partners are experiencing greater nervous system dysregulation—they are stretching their capacity and may often feel anxious and lacking their former sense of bandwidth. S-CST provides a framework to guide them through this healing journey with embodied intimacy skills and resilience practices to support both nervous system regulation and also more effective and inspiring habits of relating.

Yes. The training is both didactic and experiential, making it accessible to therapists at different stages of their somatic practice. Participants will gain concrete, embodied tools they can bring directly into their clinical work, alongside the theoretical foundation to support their use.

One core focus of this training is the body-to-body relationship between both partners. S-CST recognizes that the support partner often sets aside their own needs and desires during a medical event. Therapists will learn embodied practices that honor and restore both individuals' experiences within the couple.

The intimacy practices taught in this training are designed with an awareness that healing bodies look different, move differently, and have changing needs over time. Therapists will learn to meet clients where they are physically and emotionally, without assumptions about what intimacy should look like during or after a medical event.
